Founded in 1987, the Academy of the Company Theatre (A.C.T.) provides education in the performing arts through productions, classes, and workshops. A.C.T. puts on four elaborate youth and teen musicals and one teen play per year, featuring gorgeous costumes, grand sets, and live orchestras. A.C.T.’s educational classes (formerly known as Studio One) enrich the lives of both children and adults year-round. A faculty of established teacher/artists educate, nurture and encourage proper technical development in voice, acting, movement and music, leading students to empowered, positive experiences.

A.C.T. Youth Productions
In The Academy of the Company Theatre (A.C.T.) Productions, students receive training in acting, voice, and dance through participation in a full-length musical production performed with a live orchestra. Sessions are approximately eight weeks starting in January and September and participation is by audition. Rehearsals are Monday and Wednesday afternoons, with extra rehearsals during Production Week (the week leading up to opening). There are generally five final performances plus one or two performances during a school day. This is a tuition-based program.
A.C.T. Conservatory
Participants in the Conservatory study advanced techniques in voice, musicianship, script and lyric interpretation, and dance. Each year, the Conservatory presents two musicals and one play. The A.C.T. Conservatory is open to students ages 14-18 and sessions begin in February, May, and September, with participation by audition only. Rehearsals for the fall musical and spring play are two afternoons a week with additional rehearsals during Production Week, culminating in three performances plus one or two performances during a school day. The summer musical is offered as a three-week daily intensive for teens during the A.C.T. Summer Workshop. All are tuition-based programs.
Technical Apprentice Program
“Tech” is a great way to learn about and participate in the magic behind the scenes. Tech students create sets and learn about lighting, sound and all other aspects of production that bring a show to life. Participants get hands-on experience as they crew for A.C.T. and Company Theatre productions, and shadow professionals as they learn stagecraft. More experienced apprentices often advance to paid positions.
The Academy of The Company Theatre Summer Workshop
A.C.T. Summer Workshop sparks creativity and builds self-confidence through the arts in a challenging, supportive and fun environment. Students are able to choose six classes per day from over seventy classes in the performing and visual arts. Early registration is recommended as the program is amongst the most popular on the South Shore. A pre-professional program is offered for teen students ages 14 and up. This exploration into acting and movement hones skills for the serious student who seeks a greater challenge in theatre arts. The teen summer musical production can also be included as part of the camp day (by audition).
