This Louisiana town may be small, but the hairstyles are big at Truvy’s Beauty Shop! Six true southern belles prove that while they are flowery on the outside, they are made of steel on the inside, as they share their hopes and dreams. Beginning on the day of debutante Shelby’s wedding, the play traces this eccentric and lovable cast of characters as they support each other through life’s many challenges. Steel Magnolias is alternately hilarious and touching and—in the end—deeply revealing of the strength that binds these women together. Stop on by for some great laughs and unforgettable friendship!
Audition candidates should come prepared to read sides from the play. Southern accents are required. Attendees should bring a headshot or snapshot. A resume is helpful, but not required. Please email Director Johnny Nichols, Jr. at email@example.com.
Truvy: (35-50) Owner of a small-town beauty shop, she knows everyone’ s business and shares it with anyone who will listen. Clever and caring, she is a rock for many, with a big heart and an even bigger sense of humor. She is never lacking in the home-spun advice department.
Annelle: (20-30) Very shy twenty-year-old hair-dresser and stranger in town who appears to have a mysterious past. Her naive and soft-spoken personality undergoes a change as she becomes an obsessive bible carrying Christian who wears her heart on her sleeve.
Clairee: (50 +) Widow of the former mayor of Chinquapin, Clairee is wealthy, and wise, with rapier wit. She loves life and to laugh and poke fun at the little things that others may cry over. She is very close with Ouiser.
Shelby: (22-28) Daughter to M’lynn, Shelby is an attractive, popular bride to be. Spirited and a bit rebellious, she is a southern belle in training. Shelby suffers from childhood diabetes.
M’Lynn: (48 +) Mother of Shelby, she is a bit wound up and overprotective. Very busy and constantly thriving to ‘do the right thing” , M’lynn takes comfort in her ability to control a situation, and of course her steadfast friends.
Ouiser (pronounced Weezer—50+) is an “old money” wealthy and cantankerous character, not at all glamorous like her friends, but very down to earth and eccentric. Her unique personality and twisted sense of humor is a great relief in the serious scenes. She is very close to Clairee.
