Kristen Metcalfe is one of the powerhouse singer-actresses behind the hit country musical "Honky Tonk Angels."
Here she shares some of her thoughts on the show.

Kristen Metcalfe
Q: How did a girl, with roots in the Northeast, become a fan of old-time country music? Did you hear the music growing up?

I was a big fan of early 1990s country growing up (Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, etc), but I didn't become a fan of the older stuff until I was well into my teens. I had a friend who was a huge Tammy Wynette and George Jones fan, and it grew on me quickly!

Q: How would you describe your character in "The Honky Tonk Angels"?  What's her mission in life, goals, aspirations, etc.?

Angela is a classic housewife. She's bawdy and loud, but she's the nurturer of the group. She is the queen of the house (or trailer, in her case), and her word is law with the kids (and her husband!). When she decides to follow her dream to Nashville, she knows it won't be forever. Angela gets to realize her dream as a Honky Tonk singer, and when she returns home, she has a renewed sense of family and of love.

Q: What are some of the songs you get to sing, and what are your favorities?

I get to sing most of the "comic relief" songs in this show. Some of my sillier songs are "Stand By Your Man," "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin'," "The Pill," and "Barroom Habits." My favorite song to sing in this show is "Almost Persuaded" by Tammy Wynette. It shows Angela's serious side in Act 2, and it's a really beautiful song in a really tender moment for Angela.

Q: What has been the reaction to "The Honky Tonk Angels" in other theatres around the country? What feedback are you getting from audiences?

The responses have been overwhelming! We've been so fortunate to have great audiences all over the country. It's been such a welcome surprise to have people tell us, "You made my night!" and "I grew up with this music!" We've even had people ask where they can buy a recording of the show! It makes us wish we had one!

Q: You feature the songs of so many great artists-- Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette-- how is this music different from what you hear on the country stations today?

Country music today is more about following current pop and rock trends than older country. Today, if you're not a crossover artist, you haven't really made it. Older country was all about telling stories, whether they were heartwarming or heartbreaking. You don't find that steel guitar "pickin' and grinnin'" sound and feel in newer country music. Sometimes it's hard to tell which songs are country and which are pop. I don't see any future Cashes, Wynettes, or Joneses in current country music.

Q: Finally, talk about working with the other actresses and this great band... has it been an enjoyable tour?

Again, I feel so fortunate and blessed to be working with such a talented and dedicated group. The other beautiful Angels, our incredible band, and our amazing technicians are some of the best in the business! We've really become a family out on the road, and getting to play with all of them every night is such a privilege. It's been such fun, both on and off the stage, and I'm so grateful for the relationships I've garnered from this experience! We can't wait to see y'all!
